Episode Transcription

Gerard Way: The concept of a band is a dysfunctional family. especially early days when you're a baby band, you know, you're in this van and it's like a submarine. And so this dynamic starts to develop between all the members. And you really do kind of become dysfunctional family.

Gerard Way knows a thing or two about being in a band. He’s an international rockstar, the front man to the alt rock sensation, My Chemical Romance

But Gerard’s first love wasn’t music. It was comics.

Gerard: I went to art school and I was an illustration cartooning major. So comics were kind of like my major.

At the height of the band’s success, while touring for the album Welcome to the Black Parade, Gerard was inspired to create the characters that would be the heart of the award-winning graphic novel The Umbrella Academy.

This is Behind the Scenes, and I’m your host, Brandon Jenkins. In this podcast, we’ve brought you into the Upside Down of Stranger Things, and explored the realm of The Witcher. And now, we’re traveling back in time with the cast and crew of the Umbrella Academy, Season 2.

We'll talk with showrunner Steve Blackman about how he took Gerard’s vision from the comics to television.

Steve: Well, what I liked about it from the beginning was it, what I saw in the subject matter. I saw a dysfunctional family.  But right away, I was very inspired by, you know, Wes Anderson's work.

And we’ll examine the relationships of the Academy and the people who love them.

Gabriel Ba: They know each other's weaknesses They're all angry at each other all the time.

We’ll explore just what time travel means to the writers room and to the characters.

Aeryn Williams: The 60’s, Dallas Okay, that’s a very different story for Allison. So for me it was like, immediately, we have to talk about this.

Emmy Raver-Lampman: Nothing about that felt far away for me, nothing about that felt distant.

And we’ll hear about the unexpected struggles of recreating Texas in a city in Canada.

Steve: We hire meteorologists, we knew that snow was gonna come, but we planned it...We went away for a day and there was four feet of snow on the ground.

On July 29th, you can hear my conversation with Steve Blackman, Gerard Way, and illustrator and co-creator Gabriel Ba. The first episode will uncover how the world of the Umbrella Academy graphic novel wound up on your screens.

Then after the show drops on Netflix on July 31st, we’ll have spoiler-filled stories with the cast and crew who crossed two time periods, filmed in two countries and worked through an international pandemic in order to bring you the second season of the Umbrella Academy.

Five: What the hell did we do now?
