Episode Transcription

Male: Hey, before you go any further, you should know that this podcast goes so deep into the Stranger Things universe that even our trailer has Season Three spoilers.  Consider yourself warned.

Male: Earth, America, Indiana, Hawkins – a growing patriotic community and a shiny example of the American dream.  Today Hawkins is taking another step into the future with the brand-new Starcourt Mall.

[Music]

Female: I love the mall.  It’s so cool.  I remember like, the first time I stepped on that set, I was just in awe.  It was like traveling back in time.

Male: Sadie Sink, the access who plays “Max”, she may not have been around in the eighties, but I was.  And I can confirm that this season of Stranger Things goes all out.

Female: I mean, all my hopes and dreams were lots of perms.

Male: And there were rat tails and Jheri curls and feathered bangs.  From the hair department to the writers’ room, everyone was dripping in 1985 Jazzercise sweat.

Male: You know, we’d spend hours talking about what the stores would be and what the anchor stores would be.  And somebody would say Sam Goody.  And everybody would throw their arms up in triumph and tell seven Sam Goody stories.

Male: And it all came together in the star court and all.  The Stranger Things crew, they actually took one wing of a basically defunct mall in Duluth, Georgia and resurrected it to its 1980’s glory.

Male: When we finally got the mall delivered, everybody got there.  Everybody showed up.  I remember going to my car, sitting in the parking lot, and literally, almost crying.

Dan: I am Dan Taberski.  I’m a film maker, a director, a podcaster, a 1980’s kid, and a big fan of Stranger Things.  In this podcast, we are pulling back that curtain that Murry keeps talking about.  We interview the cast and the crew to bring you in on how this show came together from script to screen.  We’ll be digging into why and how the Cold War got to Hawkins.

Male: We knew for a long time that we wanted, you know, Russians to be a part of it.

Male: In the eighties, there were a couple of really chilling made-for-TV movies about nuclear war.  So, I was terrified of that stuff.

Male: And we wanted human villain this year, in particularly someone that David Harbour could punch in an Indiana Jones type way.

Male: The death star is how we referred to our underground Russian military facility that is deep under Hawkins.

Male: For the very first time, we’re introducing you to the mind flair himself.

Male: They just asked Tito if we knew someone, or if he could get a stunt guy.  So, Hido [phonetic 00:02:35] asked me to do it.  So, I said yeah.  And we didn’t know that there was going to be a red suit involved.  We didn’t know that was going to be wearing this big giant silver ball on my head.

Female: Silver ball.

Male: No, it was red.

Female: It was a huge silver ball.

Male: Was it silver?

Female: Yeah.  It was this huge silver ball.

Male: Well, he was in a red outfit, then.

Female: Yes.  The whole red outfit.

Male: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.  Okay.

Female: Silver ball on his head.

Male: Well, he couldn’t see.  He couldn’t see at all.

Female: He’s like, crashing into walls and doing all this.  I mean, amazing work.  But it just looks so ridiculous when you’re looking at it in real life.

Male: And, of course, we’ll be revealing the secrets of Starcourt Mall.
